As we all know this semester started off different for everyone, bringing along hundreds of challenges. It was very necessary to adapt to these changes. I believe my choice for taking this writing intensive course, writing for engineering has helped me with the coming future as we have noticed that over time much of everything is being done on computers, for instance; writing. I believe this course being online this semester has helped us with the skills we needed in the future in quite a few ways.
We started off by entering in weekly journals on a website which we had to create. The weekly journals opened the limits to my thinking. It gives me freedom to write what i want to write. The journal entries reflected on our weeks, how productive we were through the week and what challenges we faced in it. At first, what to write in the blog was a problem but within weeks and with practicing the skill of free writing I faced no issue with the oncoming weekly blogs. Matter of fact I started going over the limit of the weekly blog. The blogs helped me a lot with free writing and the making the site helped increase my knowledge.
We then headed into the analysis of the article, our first assignment where we had to annotate and analyze the paper of any article we thought to be of interest. I was interested in an article talking about the article which discussed the idea of making 3d heart valves and its research. Analyzing this paper helped me with the skills of annotation and reading. It also helped me with recognizing the theme of any paper. It was a great exercise for the future if we ever need to refer to an article, now we know how to.
Then we were challenged with a technical description writing. In this task we had to pick an engineered object and analyze the object we chose. We were to write on its specs. What features, software and hardware it came with. The object I chose was a Qled TV made by Samsung. I chose this object because it is the leading TV’s brand and type in the world right now with the best quality. In this task I advanced my skills of analyzing an object. I provided a thorough description of the object. I also gained the skill of including pictures and using it with the given topic, as we were to include supporting images with the topic.
Moving on, we were put into groups of two to three students to write a Memo. In this Memo we had to talk about a subject that needs improvement in NYC. Every student was given a specific role to play in the group, and I was given the role of Research Manager. This was my first time working in a group and it honestly had me worried in the beginning. As we introduced each other in the group I started feeling comfortable. By this task I learned the skills of interacting between groups and as we are in tough times, where we can’t see each other in person because of Covid-19, we came up with the plan of calling each other via Zoom and interacting through that.
Furthermore, we were given a Lab Report which meant in other words, Research. I was familiar with this field as this was my appointed role in the Memo task. My skills of researching had been improved with the previous task but I underestimate the research needed for a Lab Report. As the assignment went along I was researching at its best and mastered the skill of researching as I provided over 10 resources in my Lab Report.
Lastly, we were given a proposal, an Engineering proposal, my favourite among all tasks. This was my favourite task as we had to use all familiar skills with the past tasks. We had to refer to an Article. Analyze an Object. Communicate and peer review other students’ work. Provide supporting images with enough details, and thorough research for the paper. This paper tested the ability of our writing skills and our free writing skills to a point as this paper was a 7-10 page paper, not an easy task. We also had to make a site where we publish all our previous tasks neatly and in order.
In conclusion, writing for engineering was a course worth while. I enjoyed each and every task given by the professor. It helped me build skills for the coming future. It helps one come out of their comfort zone and write freely.
