What are GMOs and are they good or bad for us?
Abstract: In my research I will be explaining what GMOS are and how they affect us. Why I
found this topic interesting is because the fact that we can create something that a few decades
ago was hard to believe can be produced in any other way than the natural way. I believe that
GMOs have their own pros and cons in many different ways which I will be researching.
Introduction: What are GMOs? Where do they come from? Who is producing them? Are they
dangerous or are they good for us? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are the result of a
process where genes from the DNA of one species are excerpted and are artificially compelled
into the genes of a different breed of a plant. It was first introduced into the food market back in
the mid-1990s. Farmers since then in the US made it a trend to use GMOs which they said
helped them a lot with economical growth and preserving their time. GMOs have helped us grow
a tremendous amount of plants with ease and keep the environment clean at the same time.
GMOs now are usually present in every other food product found in the US. Jade Scipioni says
in the article, (“The Truth About GMOs: The Good, The Bad, and The Really Ugly”)
“According to the Grocery Manufacturer Association, 75% of conventional processed foods
contain GMOs.”
Materials and methods: For my research I have studied many reports on whether GMOs are
healthy or not for the consumers. I have also read reports on how this can help countries which
have a hard time importing food and with their agriculture, so in such cases GMOs really play a
huge role for them.
Results: In my research I found out that Farmers who use pesticides tend to damage the
environment, have threatened and continued to impact wildlife negatively. Pesticides are very
poisonous and can harm more than just the “pests” for which they are originally used. Exposure
to pesticides can not only affect your health but also could range to serious illnesses and diseases
in humans. Looking on the other side, GMOs not only help the plants and the environment.
GMOs are currently helping the world by supporting the cause of ending world hunger. People in
the eastern part of the earth face a lot of problems with food. In countries such as India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh etc, many families have to go through a one time meal a day and many times they
have to go through the day without any due to their income being very low. This is where GMOs
can play a huge role to help such countries.
Discussion: Genetically modified organisms not only help us but also secure our economy and
health positions. A few people might say that GMOs are not healthy and are dangerous to our
health. But in reality, these are just false rumors. Not to their knowledge GMOs have to go
through long procedures and testings. They are checked for any danger that could harm us. In the
article, (“GMO Safety and Regulations”) Alan McHughen says, “GM crops and foods are
regulated at every stage of production from research planning through field-testing, food and
environmental safety assessment, and after commercial use….GM crops and foods have been in
use in the U.S. for 30 years with no evidence, despite allegations, that they cause any harm”.
This quote helps us to understand that GMOs are no threat to a human being and are an asset for
everyone.
